Located just 15 minutes from uptown Charlotte, Barclay Downs is a wonderful little getaway. With over 200 acres of horse property, this farm is the perfect place to get away from it all. Carolyn and Jack Barclay have built a horse farm that is like no other. No matter the time of year, the grounds at Barclay Downs are always lush and green. The farm is divided into five pastures, and it’s always peaceful and secluded. Despite its small size, the Barclay’s have managed to create a beautiful setting where visitors can take horseback riding, have a picnic, or just enjoy the serenity of the property.
- The horse barn trail at Barclay Downs has three main parts. The first part is in the barn. The second part is outside. The third part is on the hill behind the barn. - The first part of the horse barn trail is the barn. There are several different stalls in the barn. Some stalls have hay in them. Other stalls have blankets in them. A few of the stalls have a table and chairs in them. - The second part of the horse barn trail is outside. There are several different places outside the barn. One place is a little river. Another place is a little hill with a picnic table. Another place is a little bridge. - The gardens at Barclay Downs are amazing. The main garden is a beautiful walkway with flowers and snack bars. Another garden is a little walkway with herbs and a potager. The horseback riding at Barclay Downs
Trails are only open during warm weather. Rain makes the trails too muddy, and the Barclay Downs owners don’t want to risk injury to the horses. - Trails are narrow, and there aren’t many places to turn around. Visitors will want to be extra careful about where they go and how long they take. - Visitors will have to book a ride through the Barclay Downs website. - Reservations can be booked five days in advance. - Reservations can be made as few as two riders together. - Reservations need to be for a specific time. - Reservations can be made for Sat, Sun, or any day.
- Visitors should make sure to check the weather before they visit. The horseback riding at Barclay Downs is only available during warm weather, as there is no covered arena. Carolyn and Jack Barclay told us that they can’t risk injury to their horses if the rain comes. - Visitors will want to visit Barclay Downs at least a couple of times before they decide if it’s the type of place they want to make a more permanent home. - Visitors are encouraged to bring drinking water, snacks, and their own horse to Barclay Downs. - Visitors are not allowed to bring their own food or beverages to Barclay Downs.
