What is Rosedale?
Rosedale is a neighborhood in the northwest section of Charlotte, North Carolina, named for the lavender flowers that once grew alongside the railroads in the area. The neighborhood is bordered by Independence Boulevard to the west, Elizabeth Ave. to the east, Fairview Rd. to the north, and Sharon Amity Rd. to the south. The main thoroughfares of Rosedale are Sharon Amity Rd. and Mount Holly Rd. Rosedale is also home to two of Charlotte’s most acclaimed private schools: The C-U-N-E School and the Heritage School.
The History of Rosedale
Rosedale was developed as a suburb of Charlotte in the 1880s, when the city’s first railroad, the Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad (CC&A), was built. The area quickly became a flourishing suburb, with streetcar lines connecting the area to the city center, the city’s business district, and the nearby University of North Carolina at Charlotte (then called “Normal Station”). As streetcar lines were extended in the 1890s, the suburb grew and attracted many small businesses and professional industries. By the 1920s, Rosedale had become a bustling center of commerce and industry. However, as these businesses were steadily moving to newer and larger suburbs, the downtown areas of many older suburbs were left with decaying commercial areas and empty buildings. The city of Charlotte attempted to stimulate Rosedale’s downtown with a “Main Street” project, but this was unsuccessful.

In the Grove, you’ll find an eclectic mix of businesses, from bakeries to coffee shops to bars to a yoga studio. It’s also a great spot to people watch as you watch the sunset over the Charlotte skyline.
Rosedale’s Homes and Buildings
Rosedale is home to several historic houses and buildings, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the Grove, the Hege-Hodge House, a Queen Anne style house, was built in 1891. The Lane Funeral Home and Chapel, built in the same style, was built at the same time as the Hege-Hodge House. Originally built as stables, the chapel was converted into a funeral home in 1903. The Hege-Hodge House is known for its ornate woodwork and stained glass windows. In the Four Mile Historic District, the Vandeveer House was built in the Greek Revival style in the 1850s and is one of the oldest houses in the neighborhood. In the Main Street Historic District, the First National Bank, built in 1924, is a notable building in the district.
Things to Do in Rosedale
The Rosedale Arts District is home to several galleries, restaurants and shops, including Rosedale Books, which is North Carolina’s oldest independent bookstore. The Arts District also hosts the Rosedale Farmers Market every Saturday from 9AM-1PM. The Rosedale Center for the Arts and the Heritage Calvin Center host a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, art exhibits, and even wedding ceremonies! The Rosedale Center for the Arts hosts an annual Wine and Canvas event throughout the year, and the Heritage Center hosts the Heritage Annual Home Tour, which features historic homes and gardens.

Rosedale is located just north of Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina.
