Charlotte North Carolina: A History of the Queen City‍

Charlotte is known as the Queen City, and for good reason. As one of the top cities to live in, it’s known for its friendly people, cultural atmosphere, and natural beauty. Located just an hour north of Atlanta, the city of Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the second-largest city in the Southeastern United States, with a population of over 600,000 people. Home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the city's top-rated baseball and softball diamonds, and the headquarters of Bank of America and Visa, among many others, the Queen City is a diverse, bustling city that is growing every day.


What to Do in Charlotte, NC

While you can’t spend your entire vacation in the Queen City, you can enjoy some of its top attractions. Bike Charlotte is a great way to see the city’s neighborhoods, and you can rent kayaks at Tryon Park. Sample local brews at one of the annual beer festivals. Be sure to check out the museums and art galleries in the area. Plan a trip to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, where you can learn more about the history of the sport you love.


Charlotte’s Best Parks

One of the best things to do in Charlotte is grab a book or your laptop and head to one of the city’s many parks. Tryon Park, with its swanky lake, is one of the most popular outdoor attractions in the Queen City. The park also has a 200-acre farm where you can get up close with some goats. There are also several museums and public art installations in the park, so you can spend your entire day there if you’d like.  If you prefer an indoor activity, the Levine Museum of the New South is an excellent museum that is sure to educate you on southern history. Tryon Park is a short drive away, and you can spend the day exploring the park and then return to your hotel room to relax before dinner.


Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame

The NASCAR Hall of Fame is one of the top attractions in Charlotte, and for good reason. The museum tells the story of NASCAR from its beginnings to the present, and you can see several cars from various races. You can also see several of the drivers who inspired the sport and how they got started.  You can visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame either on your own or with a tour, which is a good option if you’re visiting with a large group. The building is impressive enough on its own, but you can also visit the grounds, which feature a memorabilia museum, a kids’ zone, and a driving simulator that you can use to drive on the racetrack.


Catch a Mets Game

If you’re a New York sports fan, you’ll love catching a Mets game in Charlotte. The Mets play at the Charlotte County Ballpark at the Canal, which opened in 2017. The stadium was built as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and is a short drive from the city center.  The ballpark was designed with New York Mets fans in mind and features wood paneling, brick, and a Manhattan skyline painted on the outfield wall. There are also several other attractions in Charlotte County, including a water park and an aquarium. The ballpark is easily accessible from the city, so you don’t have to worry about a long drive to get there.


See a Professional Sports Game

The Panthers play at Bank of America Stadium, and the arena seats about 70,000 people, making it one of the smaller stadiums in the NFL. The stadium is one of the top landmarks in the Queen City and is located just a few miles from downtown.  If you love football, you’ll want to visit Charlotte at least once in your life to see a Panthers game. There are lots of great places to eat in the city, and Bank of America Stadium is accessible by public transportation. Bank of America Stadium is a short drive from the Queen City.


Sample the Nightlife

Charlotte has a vibrant nightlife with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. If you’re in town for a Panthers game, you might want to stick to sports bars as they often offer cheap happy hours and free food. If you’re not interested in sports, you can try one of the more upscale establishments such as The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte.  You can also sample southern cuisine at one of the many restaurants in Charlotte that specializes in the cuisine. You’ll find plenty of delicious southern fare in the Queen City, from southern food to barbecue.

If you’re looking for good southern food, you’ll love all of the great options in Charlotte. Tryon Hill Inn is one of the most popular restaurants in Charlotte and is located in the Tryon Park. It is both a museum and a restaurant, so you can make a visit to the museum and then dine at the establishment.  Amoretti’s is another favorite restaurant in Charlotte, and it’s a great place to visit when you’re in town as it’s owned by the New York Giants. You can also try local beer at one of the annual beer festivals.  If you’re looking for something more affordable, you can’t go wrong with any of the options below.

Charlotte is a popular destination, so you’ll find plenty of hotels to choose from. If you’re looking for a short term stay, you can choose from one of the Homewood Suites or Homewood Inns.
